Jämtland
An expert region in Biomass and Hydro
Area: 49 443 km²
Population: 127 000
Landscape characteristics:
Jämtland is the third biggest county in Sweden with 50% of the area covered by forest and 12% is wetland. 25% of the area is above tree limit with mountains reaching 1800 m above sea level. 8% of the area is lakes and rivers, which give good possibilities for hydroelectric power. Just 1% is arable land. The county is sparsely populated with 2,4 inhabitants / km2.
RES-production in Jämtland:
Jämtland produce 14.8 TWh renewable energy / year and the total energy consumption in the region is 5.3 TWh. This makes Jämtland the biggest exporter of RES within Sweden and there is still big potential for expanding RES production.
The production from hydroelectric power plants, mainly built during 1950 – 80, is 12.9 TWh. Some of the plants will be renovated to be more energy efficient without increasing the impact on the environment. Some parts of the rivers are protected by law from exploitations for environmental reasons. From wind power the production is 0.1 TWh, but will expand rapidly during the coming years. The total effect of the planned wind power plants in the Region is another 7 TWh / year.
Half of the annual forest logging in the county is used for pulp industries. Board industry and saw mills are the other big wood consumers. 1.6 TWh energy is produced from biomass, mainly forest residuals. 1.0 TWh is used for district heating in the region and 0.6 TWh is exported out from the region as wood chips. 0.3 TWh electricity is produced from biomass. 0.1 TWh is produced in heat pumps, from geothermal and solar installations.
In the year 2030 Jämtland will be a sustainable and fossil free region Energy and climate strategy for the Region of Jämtland 2009.
